CERTIFIED GREEN VACATIONS AT BAY GARDENS RESORTS | Budget Uganda X-mas tours

Bay Gardens Hotel & Bay Gardens Inn: Affordable Paradise

Green Globe announces all three of Bay Gardens Resorts properties – Bay Gardens Hotel, Bay Gardens Inn and Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa – have achieved certification for their sustainable operation and management.

Green Globe is the globally-recognized certification program for sustainable tourism. Travel and tourism businesses are rigorously assessed on their sustainability performance as an organization, along with their supply chain partners.

The move by Bay Gardens Resorts toward certification took a significant effort from all levels of the organization. It began with education of over 240 team members to sensitize them to the need to engrain green concepts into the organization’s culture and their daily lives.

Commenting on this achievement by Bay Gardens Resorts, Executive Director, Sanovnik Destang said, “The move came as a conscious decision from the board members of the company to make a commitment to preserving, conserving and sustaining our little slice of paradise.”

“Over the past few months, our organization has committed over ECD140,000 toward our greening efforts. This includes, but is not limited to, switching out conventional air conditioning units for more efficient inverter units, switching to LED lighting, implementing a recycling plan, as well as working more closely with our local agriculture sector and more.

“Due to the cost sensitive nature of going green, we have adopted a phased approach and will continue in our efforts to maintain our certification through the years. We’re perhaps most proud of the fact that we will be reducing our carbon emissions by 69 metric tons annually,” concluded Executive Director Destang.

The Bay Gardens Hotel and Inn scored 76%, with the Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa scoring 78%, against the sustainable tourism criteria of Green Globe’s International Standard. Both these results are above the industry average of 60-65%.

GLOBAL DELIGHTS FOR FOODIE TRAVELERS | Budget Uganda X-mas tours

10 off-the-beaten-path destinations for foodies

Food – something we cannot avoid thinking about every day, and if we are fortunate, something we can indulge in as more than just mere fuel. For the “foodie traveler,” delectable dishes guide their journeys as they go on their gastronomic adventures. And when one thinks of adventures, perhaps there is none more alluring than the continent of Africa.

Exotic and mysterious to most, Africa conjures up food daydreams of wonder. In the Southern Africa region, 15 countries provide exotic and sometimes even familiar dishes to satisfy the appetites of the traveler in search of food explorations.

The Southern Africa regions consists of Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Today, we will focus in on the foods of Mauritius and Mozambique.

Mauritius is an island with a million inhabitants, and its cuisine has Creole roots, as well as, Chinese and Indian influences (from former slave days), along with an influence of French foods. In other words, the food is vibrantly delightful, with curries and chilis high on the list of favorites

Street food is quite abundant in Mozambique and shows up in displays contained in glass boxes everywhere – on roadside tables, attached to bicycles and motorbikes, at market stalls, and on the beach. Visitors can stroll about, enjoying Mauritian foods, all the while hoping they are walking off some of those extra holiday calories. A favorite is called gajak – deep fried morsels of gateau aubergine (eggplant fritters), manioc goujons (cassava chips), and gateau patat (potato fritters). This all goes very well with mine frites (fried noodles). Noodles are fried with soy sauce and finished with a sprinkling of green onions and chili – can you feel the Chinese influence? The dim sum on offer is also some of the best around the world.

From its Indian influences, comes paratha – a buttery flat bread eaten with curry. Another favorite Indian flat bread is called roti chaud (hot roti) and is also served with curries, as well as chutneys and pickles. Another Indian favorite is briani (briyani), a very spicy rice with lamb, chicken, or lentils and often served with yogurt. Rougaille is a popular Creole dish made with meat or fish, tomatoes, garlic, onion, and thyme, resembling a stew. Offset with a refreshing Mauritian delicacy known as Millionaire’s Salad, it is a wonderful blend of hearty and spicy meets light and cool. Millionaire’s salad is made from fresh hearts of palm that are sliced. Sometimes the sliced hearts of palm are cooked with smoked marlin and/or a sauce of some sort. Another wonderful cooling food element can be found in the huge variety of Mauritian chutneys, from coconut to curry and more. Another favorite Indian-inspired dish is fish vindaye usually made with fish or vegetables along with mustard, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and onion, and is often served with rice, lentils, chutneys, and pickles.

Rounding out all these savory dishes are some of the sweetest of sweets. Take mithai, an Indian-type sweet – it is intensely sugary and highly buttery. Or a step down from sweetness, but still up there on the sweet quotient, is crème brulee – there’s that French influence again. Coconut cookies, which Mauritians call cakes, are made from grated coconut and sugar, and sweet potato cakes are tasty little packets of dough made from sweet potatoes, surrounding a filling of coconut, cardamom, and sugar… but that’s not all – which is then deep fried.

As far as what to drink, there are smooth vanilla teas, alouda – a sweet pink milky beverage flavored with syrup and tapioca balls, and there is nothing like the pure flavor of coconut water served straight from a freshly-opened coconut. For the heartier drinker, there’s Mauritius’ local beer, Phoenix, and three distilleries on the island produce agricole rum made from sugar cane juice instead of molasses. Rhumerie de Chamarel in Chamarel makes award-winning double-distilled, oak-aged rum. Some of the rums are flavored with vanilla, spices, coffee, and fruits.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS’ PARTNERSHIPS | Budget Uganda gorilla trekking

etihad-equity-partner-airlines.jpg

SAS, Scandinavia’s leading airline, a member of the Star Alliance, and Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, are set to begin codeshare operations and provide customers with enhanced travel options between Scandinavia and the UAE.

This is unique, since SAS is a member of the Star Alliance, and Etihad has no affiliation with this alliance. Etihad’s partner Air Berlin is a member of competing Oneworld.

The agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval, will strengthen both carriers by enabling them to offer greater connectivity to and from a number of key European cities. SAS is Etihad Airways’ 47th airline partnership globally and its 22nd in Europe. For SAS, Etihad is the 23rd codeshare partner and the third with strong presence in the Middle East.

Both airlines will also develop and sign a Frequent Flyer agreement, which will benefit the members of Etihad Airways’ Etihad Guest and SAS’ EuroBonus loyalty programs.

Kevin Knight, Etihad Airways’ Chief Strategy Officer, said: “This codeshare agreement with SAS will improve flight connections to Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, as well as a number of important secondary cities across Scandinavia, greatly enhancing travel options and connections for air travellers and deepening our ties with Europe and European carriers.”

“Partnerships like this one with SAS are central to Etihad Airways’ strategy and we look forward to placing the SK code on our flights to and from Abu Dhabi, and welcoming their passengers aboard our aircraft.”

The deal will see SAS place its SK code on Etihad Airways’ flights between Abu Dhabi and Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Rome, Milan, Zurich, Geneva and London Heathrow.

In turn, Etihad Airways will place its EY code on SAS-operated flights from these European destinations, excluding Brussels, onto SAS’ hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm.

The EY code will also be placed on flights beyond Copenhagen to Billund and Ålesund; beyond Oslo to Ålesund, Kristiansand, Trondheim, and Stavanger; and beyond Stockholm to Umeå, Sundsvall, and Östersund.

Eivind Roald, SAS’ Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer said: “We are very pleased to announce this new codeshare cooperation with Etihad Airways and look forward to increase traffic between Scandinavia and the Middle East.”

“Tourism and trade between our regions have increased over the years, and we are happy offer the benefits of both SAS and Etihad Airways to our travellers. From seven of SAS’ main European airports we can offer a high quality product with Etihad Airways to and from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.”

SLEEPLESS IN AMERICA | Budget Rwanda gorilla tours

Sleepless In America (Widescreen) - Walmart.com

A new survey from National Geographic Channel and Kelton Global, timed to the premiere of Sleepless in America, finds that most Americans sleep less than eight hours a night, along with other surprising revelations.

Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, Barry White, Barbra Streisand, and Elton John are top choices among famous singers Americans would most want singing them to sleep.

Sleepless in American premieres Sunday, Nov. 30, at 8 PM ET/PT on the National Geographic Channel.

Millions of Americans suffer from some sort of sleep disorder — and 73 percent of the nation currently logs less than eight hours of sleep each night. What’s more alarming is that our efforts to get more rest could actually be doing more harm than good.

In an unprecedented partnership, National Geographic Channel (NGC), along with The Public Good Projects and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), America’s foremost scientific authority, will draw the nation’s attention to the science of sleep — a topic fundamental to our collective well-being. Sleepless in America premieres Sunday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NGC.

The new survey released today by National Geographic Channel indicates that 54 percent of Americans feel they need at least eight hours of sleep to feel well-rested, yet 73 percent sleep for less than eight hours every night. On average, it takes Americans 24 minutes to fall asleep, with 38 percent reporting 25 minutes or longer for them to fall asleep. Furthermore, over a third of Americans (34%) sleeps worse now than they did five years ago, a possible sign that this epidemic is getting worse.

The upcoming winter holidays only seem to reduce our hours of sleep each night, as almost four in five (77%) believe that the season will keep them up at night for at least one reason. Interestingly, stressful thoughts such as the cost of holiday gifts (36%) and shopping lists (33%) are just as likely to get in the way of slumber as general excitement about the season (34%).

HUSBAND IN BERMUDA, WIFE IN CUBA | Budget Uganda tours

This honeymoon was cut short. The wife returned to Cuba shortly after landing, the husband is in jail in Bermuda trying to get the money together for a fine.

A drunk British man caused a flight bound for Cuba to make an emergency landing in Bermuda after arguing with his new wife and threatening to kill everyone on the plane.

Mohammed Khelya, 22, from Lancashire, had been drinking from a bottle of duty-free vodka before arguing with his wife on Monday.

He was taken in handcuffs to the back of the plane, forcing an unscheduled landing, prosecutors said.

On Tuesday, he appeared at a court in Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital, and pleaded guilty to being drunk on the plane and to threatening flight staff.

“I don’t know how I’m going to forgive myself,” he said in court.

“I don’t know how she’s going to forgive me,” he added, referring to his wife.

Khelya and his wife were among 311 passengers on board a Thomas Cook flight, which took off from Manchester International Airport.

A few hours into the flight, his wife changed seats to get away from him, after which he asked a crew member to see her. “I’m going to kill you and I’m going to kill everyone after,” Khelya told a crew member, according to prosecutors.

As he was taken to the rear of the plane in handcuffs, he spat on other passengers. The crew had to cover them with blankets as protection.

The aircraft was then diverted to Cuba to L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda, where police officers escorted Khelya off the plane.

While he was grounded in Bermuda, Khelya’s wife continued on to Cuba without him.

“THE NATIONAL DOG SHOW” | Budget Uganda gorilla trekking

Thanksgiving Tradition The National Dog Show #TheDogShow

The National Dog Show Presented by Purina will introduce two new American Kennel Club (AKC) breeds – the Coton de Tulear and the Wirehaired Vizsla – to the American public on Thanksgiving Day. With the addition of the Coton de Tulear and the Wirehaired Vizsla, a total of 33 new breeds have been introduced to the competition since 2003.

The two new additions to the American Kennel Club Registry will make their major event debut on the two-hour NBC TV special Thanksgiving Day, immediately following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. A total audience of some 20 million viewers is expected to watch the broadcast, from noon-2 p.m. in all time zones.

The following is a description of each new breed:

• The Coton de Tulear (KO-Tone Dih TOO-Lay-ARE) was developed by natural selection in Madagascar. The Coton’s “cottony texture” of the white coat, rectangular silhouette and convex topline define the breed. Intelligent, quirky and clown-like, Cotons quickly became a favorite of the island’s aristocracy, who proclaimed them, “The Royal Dog of Madagascar”. With long flowing coats in the show ring, family pets are often kept in “easy care” short clips. Sturdy and athletic, Cotons excel in agility and obedience training and make for ideal companions, readily adaptable to all lifestyles.

• The Wirehaired Vizsla (VEESH-la) was developed by hunters and falconers who desired a sturdy, versatile hunting dog able to withstand harsh winters whether in fields, forests or waters. The Wirehaired Vizsla is a distinguished, versatile dog of medium size, bred for substance and a dense wire coat.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO TOURISM MINISTER: IT WAS A CALLOUS AND REPREHENSIBLE ACT | Budget Uganda X-mas tours

... Trinidad and Tobago’s Tourism Minister: Callous & reprehensible act

A callous and reprehensible act that we condemn in the strongest way! This is how the Minister of Tourism of Trinidad and Tobago has described the murder of German nationals, Brigid and Hubertus Keil in Tobago.

“The Government and people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago are shocked and saddened by this ruthless act and we send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Keil family members and friends,” Minister Hadeed said.

He added: “I give the assurance to the Keils’ family members and friends that Trinidad & Tobago will apply every possible effort to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice, in the quickest possible time.”

The T&T Tourism Minister also assured holidaymakers that while the gruesome act casts a shadow over personal security for visitors, Trinidad & Tobago remains a tourist destination that takes the safety and comfort of their visitors very seriously.

“I want the world to know that while this is indeed a horrific act, it is not a common occurrence on tourists who visit our paradise island.”

Police are proceeding aggressively with investigations into the circumstances of the attack, with a promise from Mr. Hadeed that the authorities will be scrupulous and exhaustive in their efforts.

The deaths come as a shock to all of Trinidad and Tobago, in a time when Tobago’s already low crime rate has been progressively reduced in the past 12 months.
