ROTTERDAM NAMED ONE OF TOP 10 CITIES | Gorilla treks Bwndi Uganda

The Netherlands’ second biggest metropolis on the Nieuwe Maas river, is a veritable open-air gallery of modern, post-modern and contemporary construction. It’s a remarkable feat for a city largely razed to the ground by WWII bombers. Rebuilding has continued unabated ever since with ingenuity and vision.

Many travelers’ only glimpse of Rotterdam is through the train window and route from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. But with a palpable energy, creative spirit and urban regeneration that are cementing its status as one of Europe’s hippest, most happening destinations, Rotterdam city makes an eye-opening stopover with some 170 nationalities calling it home.

Architecture: This city is an in-your-face contrast to old-world Europe, with its angular glass-clad buildings and ever-changing skyline. Having been bombed flat during WWII, Rotterdam quickly transformed itself and, as hope springs eternal, sprouted a flurry of modern buildings, cementing itself as an architecturally trailblazing city. Wander around Rotterdam and you’ll see examples of architectural styles spanning post-WWII to the present day.

Central Station: The stunning revamp of the Centraal Station was completed in March 2014 to cope with a significant rise in the number of passengers. Viewed from the north aspect it has a modest transparent glass front while the south entrance is a striking slanted roof with the original clock and station sign.

Most bizarre sight: Designed by architect Piet Blom and built between the late 1970s and early ’80s, this innovative series of toppled and tilted yellow-and-grey cubes paved the way for modern architecture in Rotterdam. Each house in the Overblaak Development was built to resemble a tree and together they represent a forest. One of the apartment owners has turned his into a museum for public viewing. You can peek inside Kubus Museum-House to see just how a house tilted at a 45° angle and resting on a hexagonal pylon really works, and admire the custom-built furniture.

UGANDA RETURNS AS LONELY PLANET | Gorilla treks Bwndi Uganda

The East African countries, including Uganda, have been singled out by Lonely Planet as best value destinations for next year, following an earlier recommendations which had made Uganda their choice destination.

East Africa, rich in wildlife, scenery, history and culture has much to offer and the launch last year of the common tourist Visa for Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda has made travel across the region easier than ever before.

The three countries will have a joint stand at the upcoming World Travel Market in London in early November and the recommendation by Lonely Planet is seen as a shot in the arm of their promotional activities, in particular for Kenya where a hugely successful Magical Kenya Travel Expo concluded two weeks ago at the seaside resort of Diani.

It was there that Uganda in fact won the award as best exhibitor overall and also as best tourism board exhibitor as visitors to the expo flocked to the stand to get information about adventure activities, gorilla tracking and in particular about birding. With over 1.000 species of birds found in Uganda alone is the country and the entire East Africa a treasure trove for ornithologists.

The upcoming Papal visit to both Kenya and Uganda is seen as an added boost for pilgrimage tourism, where the Martyrs Shine in Namugongo outside Kampala and the Rwandan shrine in Kibeho have attracted a lot of interest in the wake of the forthcoming visit of the Pope.

IBTM AMERICA PRESENTS NEW MIX | mountain gorilla feeding

ibtm america, part of ibtm events, will be focusing once again on delivering a comprehensive mix of top level meetings industry buyers -with the focus on Corporate and Incentive planners – for its 2016 event which is set to take place in Nashville.

The show team will take to the road this month to engage in focus groups as well as customer visits all over the US. The first will be held in Southern Florida followed by another on the East Coast in early December. The purpose of this qualitative research will be to gain a clearer understanding of both exhibitor requirements and buyer business patterns and objectives.

The new recruitment process will also involve the use of LinkedIn Navigator, reaching out to the other ibtm events and their association partners as a resource, recruiting buyers incrementally with exhibitors, research to understand how much of an issue “preferred suppliers” are for corporate planners in America, the use of “industry spiders” to gain access to the right corporate planners and gain introductions, targeting Fortune 1000 corporates and adding new meeting planners to existing database as well as face to face and telephone screening of buyers.

Christine Gaudet, Director of Events, Life Sciences Trainers & Educators Network (LTEN), commented: “I had heard about the event but never attended. I wanted to check it out and I was impressed– I loved the one-on-one meetings set up, it was very well run. I was able to discover more about Chicago and I’m running a summit there next week. I also found a couple of vendors I’m planning on using, secured a mobile app provider for my meeting in Chicago this week, and discovered a few venues and destinations that I’ll be considering for future events. I can sum ibtm america up in two words: well done!”

Edward Weller, Account Director, Digital Mauve, commented: “ibtm america was a great opportunity to speak to people who we don’t normally see. I was given a couple of briefs for international events and found a new DMC. I also met with a private jet company that was a great contact. The keynote speakers and the session on planning incentive travel inspired me. The event was really good, not only my appointments, but the networking opportunities as well.”

UAE LAUNCHES GLOBAL PROJECT | mountain gorilla feeding

The UAE has stated that it is a global responsibility to protect the history and heritage of the Middle East , taking into account the valuable contributions of the region to the progress of humanity.

Stating that archaeological sites are not just stone structures, Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi , Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Managing Director of Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation, described the heritage landmarks in the region as crucial pieces in the great legacy of human achievements.

Al Gergawi stated this as the Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation announced a global partnership with UNESCO and the UK-based Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA), a joint venture between Harvard University and the University of Oxford , to document the archaeological sites in the region using three-dimensional imaging technology to rebuild them through 3D printing in the event of potential risks.

Dr. Roger Michel, Executive Director of the Institute for Digital Archaeology, said: “With gracious support from the Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation, the Institute for Digital Archaeology will redouble its efforts to restore the landscape of the Middle East and the great symbols of our shared cultural heritage that have been destroyed or defaced. These symbols – the architecture and objects of the ancient world – speak powerfully to what unites the East and the West. The UAE is a great friend of this important work.”

Saif Al-Aleeli , CEO of the Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation, said the global partnership is the first of a series of initiatives in the coming days. He added that the partnership comes as a part of the strategic vision of Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation to build long term cooperation with academic and scientific institutions and research centres in all areas.

The Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation global project will document the heritage monuments of the region by taking up to one million digital images of these sites using three-dimensional imaging technology until end of year 2015.
